I don't think I've ever seen a movie like this in terms of humor and the many weird things. From the moment with the talking sniffed sheep I realized that I absolutely shouldn't think and just simply watch what the film has to offer. All in all I had a good laugh about it, there were certainly some nice jokes in it. In addition, the constant references to the Godfather (especially since I just saw this one) are nice to recognize. For this theme month I also watched analyze this and thought it was fun to see Joe Viterelli again as a not too bright sidekick, I also thought the pieces that he walked around with the Korean were really fantastic. This movie doesn't deserve more than three stars, but I certainly enjoyed it.

It's almost a genre in itself; the parodies with the bland, deadpan humor of Airplane and The Naked Gun, among others. And just like any subgenre, you have the absolute top in this category - with Naked Gun as the great king - and also huge junk, with the films of Seltzer and Friedberg as the low point. And right in the middle is this Mafia! from director Jim Abrahams, a well-known name in the genre, who as a director was also involved in Hot Shots and Airplane, among others.

mafia! is a parody of gangster films like The Godfather, but other genres are regularly imitated. That is always unfortunate. It's not as bad as in the films of the aforementioned Seltzer and Friedberg, who just imitate all kinds of random popular films, without any line, form or good jokes (a bit of TV-Canteen, so to speak). So come in Mafia! in addition to Godfather, Goodfellas and Casino, suddenly entire scenes with Forrest Gump, Jaws or Jurassic Park pass by. That does not alter the fact that Mafia! has a few funny moments. Lloyd Bridges always remains a nice appearance and here and there a very witty scene pops up. That moment when that tree gets shot remains one of my favorite jokes.

3 stars.

"You lost a lot of blood but we found most of it."

The film is directed and written by Jim Abrahams. The man who is good at putting together films based on plots and scenes from other people's films. Plots and scenes that remain recognizable but are refined are recycled and parsed. Although that method may sound a bit easy-going, after looking at other work by Abrahams, I know that comfort is not an issue. I have great admiration for the skill with which Jim Abrahams impersonates other films. I find Airplane! (1980) (which he co-produced with the Zucker brothers) is still one of the best comedies of all time.

The great source of inspiration for the humor in Jane Austen's Mafia! is of course The Godfather (1972). But Casino (1995) is also an important source from which to draw. Storylines from both films are easy to recognize. The recognition is important for the impact of the jokes. The story is not important. The humor is much more important. The film is therefore a hodgepodge of absurd scenes that follow a rough storyline that actually doesn't matter.

Jane Austen's Mafia! is a film that goes well with similar parodies. Not exactly of the level of Airplane or The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988), but with enough stupidity and absurdity to make you laugh. A fun game while watching is to guess which movies are being abused to make you laugh.

I have me with Jane Austens Mafia! well entertained.
