Rarely so surprised by a film as with Florence Foster Jenkins. Her story seems almost impossible to tell without a wink and without making a joke of the characters. Yet Stephen Frears has managed to tell the story fascinatingly with characters that turn out to be much more than we initially think. There is even a nuance in motives and emotions that were not only successfully conveyed but that made me cry towards the end. What a beautiful movie.

A sweet film in which Meryl Streep beautifully makes the singing abilities of her character and her inability to see its limitations laughable, but not the character and her character herself. Hugh Grant offers a sublime counterplay (remarkable that Streep was, but he was not nominated for an Oscar), Simon Helberg gets the most out of his role, and David Haig has a tasty supporting role as a shrewd singing pedagogue. A wonderful feel-good film by veteran Stephen Frears, who is now 76 as well, but with films such as The Queen, Philomena and this one can last for a while (and his next film A very English scandal –also with Hugh Grant– is already in the post-production phase, according to IMDb).

Despite the fact that the film has received good reviews according to various sources, I heard from people around me that they found it very disappointing when it came out in 2016. I myself have always been curious about this collaboration between Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant, so it was time to judge for myself.

I had a great time with this. Florence is a charming person and you grant her a successful experience at Carnegie Hall, even though her singing skills are far below par. The rehearsals and performances lead to the necessary charming and humorous scenes, but the drama part of the film also comes into its own. Meryl Streep plays the title character in a nice, eccentric way. Like Florence, she managed to make me laugh several times and even move me a bit. Hugh Grant is often portrayed as an actor who can only play one kind of role (that of British charmer), but I've seen otherwise several times now. His role in this film is an example of that. He impressively portrays a character that is both sympathetic and despicable. Simon Helberg's supporting role also worked well; the dynamic between him and Streep and Grant was very natural.

Florence Foster Jenkins is an amusing sit. The film is fairly straightforward, but does exactly what is expected of it. The strongly written script and the way in which this is performed by the cast, ensures that the film is both hilarious and moving. In addition, the film suggests that the story of Florence is being told with dignity, and I believe that Stephen Frears has achieved exactly his goal.

3.5*
