A somewhat boring film, but still beautifully portrayed. Something that is not often seen in the West, especially the combination of a sexually tinted theme with some drama. Ai no korida is the film of a couple that starts as a pleasure, but where passion quickly grows and they are even willing to pay a price for it. In a time when the West is looking for a way in sexual freedom in the film world with films like Deep Throat or Turks Fruit, this is not a matter of provocation here, but simply part of the story. You should not see the film for those scenes, it is more the physical love between two characters than a trick of the director to attract viewers. The result is a beautiful film, perhaps a bit dated and still somewhat boring.

Interesting.

Oshima had disappointed me so far, but I found this film a lot more interesting. I already knew the story of Sada (it has also been filmed several times) and I don't think Oshima's film is the best either, but it is captivating.

It is surprising to see a more explicit Japanese film anyway. Oshima simply shows what needs to be shown and there is nothing wrong with that. Terms like porn and even eroticism are hardly appropriate, because it is not all that wonderfully erotic and exciting, but the focus is on Sada's sexual excess and the relationship with her brand new husband.

Despite the fact that the pace is quite slow, that not much actually happens and the setting remains very limited, Oshima still manages to keep it exciting and intense. The last half hour also goes nicely crescendo. Good acting, quite nicely shot and a nice finale, this Oshima is definitely worth seeing once.

Well, you can certainly call it an erotic picture. Pornographic? I wouldn't go that far. Apart from that one blow job with ejaculation and perhaps that rather funny scene with that egg, it's hardly explicit. On the contrary, I thought. There were a lot of suggestive scenes. I had the impression that they did nothing more than crawl on each other. A bit excessive to show that there was an obsessive sexual relationship with each other (and even with others).

A bit hollow in that respect because there was consequently little to talk about a story. The only common thread I could unravel was that after a while the girl did or asked some very strange things. That blow job is one thing, that egg too, choking sex possibly too, but in letting yourself pee, the idea of cutting off your husband's penis and so on... No, there was something wrong with her with the way she wanted to express her love.

Atmospheric with those geishas and such, only they warbled a bit too much. Film is too unbalanced to catch on. Too bad really, because there was potential and that has nothing to do with ugly or beautiful actors.
