If you are looking for the ultimate film that exudes the 80s, then The Monster Squad is the place to be. A 'family horror' in the style of Gremlins, The Goonies, ET and The Gate, but with the well-known movie monsters such as Dracula, Wolfman and Frankenstein. Fred Dekker knows how to combine family film and exciting horror in a strong way. Only very occasionally does the film become a bit too childish and sometimes it goes the other way, but usually the script by Dekker and Shane Black stays perfectly in the middle. The cast is fun, the atmosphere is spot-on and the make-up and special effects by Stan Winston are also excellent. In the list of horror films that are perfect for the whole family, this one is somewhere at the top.

4 stars.

The Goonies mixed with classic horror and honestly, it's damn entertaining.

Acting performances are not always great but good enough not to irritate, especially the German neighbor is a very nice character!

Also Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolfman and the rest of the gang were convincingly portrayed, especially Dracula was wonderfully sarcastic.

The storyline is predictable, but oh well? The movie doesn't last that long and because of that the movie has a nice pace.

Definitely a fun way to spend time.

3.5*

Nice childhood memories, which I also reviewed after many years. And this one does not disappoint me after that time, yes of course you see it differently. The story is nice and is actually a mix of The Goonies meets The Lost Boys in my eyes. The cast with Andre Gower, Duncan Regehr, (Dracula) and Tom Noonan (Frankenstein's monster) plays nice and I especially like the atmosphere and setting well done. Certainly a cult classic in the genre, the only disadvantage is that it only lasts 82 minutes 76 minutes without credits that could have been a bit longer
