If the renovation of the Rijksmuseum is started optimistically in 2003, people think it will be possible to reopen its doors in 2008. However, the restoration has been plagued from the start by stiff opposing forces, and the opening – now with new director Wim Pijbes – will have to wait until 2013. For ten years, Oeke Hoogendijk filmed behind the closed doors of the Rijksmuseum. The emphasis in the documentary is on what was and is the main thing behind the scenes: the art, all these years largely stored in endless depots in the polder, and the people behind that art. The curators working on the furnishing of their new rooms; the directors, who have to fight on many fronts; the caretaker, who keeps a close eye on 'his' building day and night all these years.
