Hollow Triumph is a very pulpy noir. Directed by one of the many war immigrants who made noirs. The relatively unknown Steve Sekely who mainly made low budget films for small studios. One of his last films became his most famous. The 1962 film adaptation of The Day of The Triffids. Hollow Triumph came about because Paul Henreid wanted to get back to work after the Hollywood studios stopped giving him work. So he followed a trend in late 1940s Hollywood. So he also started a production company. This was the first movie that came out of it. Made for the humble studio Eagle-Lion on a budget. Henreid wanted to make this in order to get a leading role as a supporting actor and play a gangster, against his normal casting.

Henreid plays a double role and does it nicely, but does not manage to lift the film. The film also has a plot with some credibility issues. The ending, on the other hand, is strong and very dejected and the film is nowhere tempted to make the main character a bit nicer. And the movie had the great John Alton behind the camera who could make a movie look nice on almost no budget. That made a difference.

Sekerly would make cheapies in many genres for many studios. Henreid would mainly continue to act but produce a few more films and eventually even direct, including the forgotten low-budget noir For Men Only (1952) , which is apparently about hazing among students (immediately interested).
