Always Watching: A Marble Hornets Story plot

"You shouldn't have looked."

Always on the hunt for an intriguing news story, a small-town news crew follows a group of men inspecting confiscated houses. Somewhere in a very strange house, the team discovers a box of VHS tapes in an old closet. Hoping for a good story, they take the box to the studio. In this way they learn that the last residents were not evicted by the bank, but that they fled the house in fear for their lives.

This one was on TV recently, so I decided to catch it. Well, the film is somewhat similar to Paranormal Activity, but I found Marble Hornets more exciting because there was more going on.

The acting was convincing and I found the film captivating enough to keep watching.

I liked the ending a little less.

Great film to have seen on TV, but don't expect too much from it.

We weren't disappointed after reading the reviews first, though it wasn't entirely clear to us whether the masked person was evil or alien. We're assuming the former.
There were some nice jump scares, it could have been a bit more, but the story itself was put together reasonably well.

What did irritate us a bit was that it was filmed with a handheld camera again, so from the hand and from cameras in the car, etc. We appreciate the "old-fashioned" film work more.

Director James Moran makes no secret of his influences, as the legend in question is prominently displayed on the poster. This makes it all the more strange that this creature has a very limited presence in the actual film, as you're mainly stuck with a trio of characters who occasionally see some scary things. Moran builds the tension well, and there are several scenes in Always Watching that are definitely worth watching, but towards the end, everything feels rushed, and the viewer is left somewhat unsatisfied. For now, we'll have to wait and see if this story gets a proper film adaptation.
