Biographical film about Czech actress Lida Baarova, who came to Berlin in the 1930s to make films. She becomes the sweetheart of Gustav Fröhlich, at that time the most popular actor in Germany. When she meets propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels, they start a relationship. This to the anger of Goebbels' wife Magda, who calls Hitler to help. The Führer forces Goebbels to give up his lover and Lida Baarova is banned from playing. Lida later flees back to her homeland, and when it is occupied by the Germans, to Italy. After the war she returns to Prague, where she ends up in prison. She will be haunted for the rest of her life by the stigma of having been 'Goebbels' sweetheart'. In old age she looks back on her life.
