In fashion mecca New York, the elderly fabric designer and businesswoman Iris Apfel (93) is a true phenomenon. The eloquent spectacle wearer is a 'must see' at any cultural event. This portrait shows that everyone wants something from this friendly bird of paradise; from advice or a design to knowledge transfer. Her phone rings all day. Yet she has a kind word for everyone. Apfel, who ran the Old World Weavers textile firm, well-known to the White House for more than half a century with her hundred-year-old husband Carl, is still very much alive. Or “vertical”, as she mockingly calls it.
