Schneider vs. Bax plot
Schneider (Tom Dewispelaere), a hit man, receives a call from Mertens on the morning of his birthday. He has a rush job for Schneider, who turns down the job because it's his birthday and his wife Lucy had promised to help prepare the feast. Mertens insists it is an important matter. When they meet in Merten's office, Schneider learns that the target is Ramon Bax (Alex van Warmerdam), a writer. Bax lives alone in a secluded place. Because it seems like an easy job, Schneider accepts the assignment. However, this simple job turns out to be more difficult than expected.

Alex van Warmerdam is the Hitchcock of the rustling reed beds. Perhaps it is the stage background of the filmmaker, but it is always a pleasure to see which surreal setting he has devised again. Here the main scene is a raft house on a small lake, while within walking distance an unfinished house sinks into the swamp. It is in this place that two hitmen meet each other's fate and are ordered to kill the other. Behind Schneider's (Tom Dewispelaere) sniper sights is a law-abiding family man who works meticulously and thoroughly. Behind Bax's (Alex van Warmerdam) sniper sights is a middle-aged man who pays the price of a lifetime of drinking, sniffing, making love and otherwise avoiding responsibilities. Both have their own way of working and philosophy, but they will have to adapt that familiar way of doing things because 'the others' get in the way and bring new complications. The nice thing about 'Schneider vs. Bax' (2015) is that sympathy for a character changes imperceptibly into antipathy (or vice versa) depending on the circumstances in which the characters find themselves. Everyone only plays his or her socially determined role to save the skin.

After seeing Ober last Monday and years ago Abel, I have now started the third film by this director and I have to say that I really like the Van Warmerdam films!
Schneider vs Bax also knows how to be original and fresh, actors who do it well and again a wonderfully sarcastic role by the director himself.
Van Warmerdam manages to mix the thriller/crime elements nicely with humor and the pace remains very pleasant.
It is a pity that the last 10 minutes did not affect me a bit, in the first place a pity that Bax suddenly lets himself be shot very easily and that after a difficult chase from Bax, Schneider just lets her live because she is naked and vulnerable is. But of course a nice affair to throw in an extra nude scene.
Very close to 4, but I'm just stuck on 3.5.

A nice Warmerdam, where a cat-and-mouse game is played between two hitmen. However, not everything goes according to plan and that makes the plot quite enjoyable. Some chaotic and absurd situations, a bit typical Warmerdam I think, but he makes it fun and enjoyable without losing sight of the core.
Stylishly filmed, great characters and a nice plot to follow. The location is very successful with that high reed. Beautiful nature too, but also very functional. The tension was cut and it was unclear where or how the film would end.
Cast also did well with a mix between Belgians and Dutch. Everyone plays their part very well. Great dialogues too, witty, humorous and interesting to follow. Nice!
