Run All Night plot

Brooklyn-based mobster and hit man Jimmy Conlon (Neeson), aka The Gravedigger, has seen better days. Jimmy, the best friend of mob boss Shawn Maguire (Ed Harris), is now 55 and haunted by his past sins. Conlon has been watched over by a tenacious detective (D'Onofrio) for over thirty years. In recent years Jimmy has mainly sought refuge in a whiskey glass. But when his son Mike (Kinnaman) becomes the target, Jimmy must make a choice between the mafia family he once chose and his real family, with whom he has been out of contact for a long time. Mike is on the run, and Jimmy must prevent his son from suffering the same fate as him, ending up on the wrong side of a gun. Jimmy has only one night to find out which world he is loyal to, to set things right again.

Well. Exactly what I expected actually. An unoriginal and unbelievable 13 in a dozen action movie. Skillfully made but with only the solid, chewed-out ingredients and therefore not particularly fascinating. But quite ok as a simple look away for once. Not as crazy far-fetched as, for example, "The Commuter" fortunately.

Not quite.

The premise is fine and the actors are also satisfactory, but it still lacks some balls to really make up for it. It is fairly neatly made, Collet-Sera is someone who thinks visually. But he gives in too easily to the laws of Hollywood. As a result, the film sometimes falls silent for too long and, for example, he just doesn't know how to display a Common like this. Sera continues to play it too safe to really get more out of it than a nice snack.

3 stars.

OK.

Neeson is back as the action hero. Nowadays he seems to choose more roles that also give a deeper layer to his character, but he always remains that action hero with the deep voice. Also in Run All Night he eventually plays a character that we often see of him.

Only in the first half hour he may be a drunk who leads a sad existence. I think it's totally fine because Neeson can act well. This role is also no problem for him. Supporting roles such as Kinnaman, Harris or D'Onofrio don't match Neeson (they also get less space for it) but they do well.

The visual aspect is the part where I can praise the film the most. Collet-Serra is qualitatively a pretty good director and knows how to give his film just that little bit extra. In this case, these are the long and clear shots of, for example, the city that stop at a certain point where the scene starts. Viewers who see the film will know what I mean.

The colors also look good and the cinematography looks neat. However, that's where it pretty much ends. The story is rather simple and flimsy. The action scenes themselves aren't too convincing either. Slightly too simple "character change" also with Neeson first on the run to eventually shoot down a whole battalion of bad guys.

I think it's fine that you want to give a film a deeper layer, but that could be a little more complex and attentive than the kind that Run All Night has to offer. The action also doesn't really give a kick, so you mainly have a film that looks nice and looks nice, but can't really convince. Neeson does well, but that's about it.
