Weird movie that also opens crazy with game the Daruma doll. Deliciously bloody!

The games with the giant cat and Kokeshi game are the strongest parts of the movie. The nursery rhyme bambo cage, little bird in a cag in the Kokeshi game was very entertaining.

Visually it looked fine up until then. But then the film gradually sags. I already liked the game with the polar bear a bit less, but especially the Matroesjka game was a disappointment. Long and boring in terms of design. The film scores high here, but I expected more. 5/10

Top entertainment from those wonderful Japanese Strangely enough I hadn't seen this one yet, but since I've seen work before, I could really appreciate Takashi Miike's work, with Ichi at the forefront, but many other delicious horror, action. The film contains so much that I like and it's that typical Japanese thing that's a big plus. This one definitely deserves a big 8/10.

I think it's been over five years since I last saw a Miike film. And what a joyful reunion it is. As The Gods Will is a mix of Sono's Tag / Riaru Onigokko (2015) and the classic Batoru Rowaiaru (2000) and gets straight to the point: here too, young schoolchildren are forced to take part in a gruesome game of life and death. During each part, they have to solve (children's) riddles within a certain time in order to survive, which of course conjures up associations with the more recent Squid Game / Ojing-eo Geim (2021 - 2025). However, it remains rather uncertain how they ended up in this situation, or what orchestrating entity is behind these sadistic practices.

Instead, the stylized bloodshed, childish nature of the riddles, and cartoonish design of the opponents often work more to elicit laughs than to come across as gruesome or scary - and actually that only benefits the film's entertainment. However, the film does slacken off when the running time starts to drag a bit and the ending (creatively speaking) actually ends on a bit of a minor note. The fact that the facts remain ambiguous is not so much the problem (although that anonymous, isolated computer guy seems to know more about it), the film does fail to put a convincing period under the exclamation mark. In my opinion, something better could have been conjured up in terms of revelation.

Nevertheless a very entertaining Miike, who always comes up with a refreshing mix of film fun and oddities. 3.5*
