Since my high school days I have been fascinated by books and films about the fight against social injustice. Within that genre this docudrama is very interesting because the focus is not on the leader of the movement (Emmeline Pankhurst), but on the fighters in the field and the impact that their actions had on their own personal environment at the time. Sarah Gavron (Brick Lane (2007)) has put together a solid film, supported by the excellent acting of Mulligan, Duff, Bonham-Carter and Gleeson.

When I read the comment of clubsport, it seems that there is still a world to be won for women, while I thought that we would have gotten over that a hundred years later. Shocking that this does not appear to be the case.

Stays neatly within the lines, a film that you and I would probably have made in this way. Subtlety is secretly not the strongest side of this film. All the men are mean here with little respect for women. And the two who are not mean (the husbands of Mulligan and Carter) turn out to be quite cowards towards the end. The women are brave and virtuous, even the fact that they are guilty of at least vandalism, we are supposed to accept. No wonder then that the supreme woman of women, M. Streep, suddenly shows up for a short supporting role as supreme suffragette.

Those who are not bothered by this naive point of view will have a good time with this otherwise very solid Suffragette, but in my opinion this premise would have deserved a better film.

Beautiful insight into the struggle women had to stand up for the right to vote. This coupled with a patriarchal society in which a woman had very little say in her life. Mulligan delivers a good performance with her portrayal of Maud who as a woman has already had everything and still has to endure. Also a wake-up call as women are slowly losing their hard-won rights due to the rise of other movements. Good film for history at every high school.
