The Peanuts Movie is totally harmless fun for the whole family. The mix between classic and modern animation is cleverly rendered. The film has everything that makes it -Charlie Brown- and the creators pay tribute to a franchise and its fans.

Because I just came down with a serious case of inadequacy.

I don't do it that often, start with a quote. But with this film, the above piece of dialogue is the ideal proof of the somewhat schizophrenic atmosphere of this animation (and, as far as I can tell, the Charlie Brown/Snoopie atmosphere in general).

It does indeed seem like a movie that is very childish. And sometimes it really is. But a few seconds later you suddenly hear a quote or see a reference that children really can't handle at all. And not in the "grown-up Pixar humor" way, but in a fully grown-up way.

The nice thing is that you also see that reflected in the animation style. Some shots look extremely simple, but when the camera suddenly moves there appears to be a lot more detail and skill than the original seemed. That constant swing between childlike simplicity and healthy depth (without it getting really serious) is what makes this film special.

It is perhaps a bit of a shame that just that visual mess has to be reflected in this film. Snoopie has his own style that they try to shape here in a more modern way, but it would be good for American CG animation to experiment a bit more with different styles with new films, instead of always bringing out the same plastic, colorful style . Then this is 100x more interesting.

There is not much line in the film, but that is rarely a stumbling block for me. The film looks pleasant, sweet and above all loving. A fun, cheerful film, where a lot more is bubbling under the childish surface than a few stills of the film can capture. Without sacrificing lightness and frivolity. Reminds me a bit of the last Winnie the Pooh movie.

3.5*

Sweet video. Watched with my dad - he's been a fan of the Charlie Brown comics since he was a kid and this movie has been on my mind for a while. What is nice is that the story is kept very small. The greatest moments are still with the dreams of dog Snoopy and those are also the least fascinating parts. More fun is when it comes to Charlie Brown, his classmates and what they go through (nothing really special and that's nice). Animation is okay but not very special and I think old fashion animation would have been better. Pace and length are fine for this. 3.0*.
