A mess. Actually, the script is too grand and perhaps even too abstract to be put into a hundred-minute film. This is especially noticeable in a very long-winded denouement in which the nature of the "abattoir" is explained in far too many words. Hardly anything is left to the viewer's imagination, neither in words nor in images. Moreover, the film relies on a few shaky characters, take that annoying cop for example: a walking cliché and no addition to the plot developments. Although some images are beautiful to look at, and very atmospheric, it is still difficult to speak of a certain tone. It seems as if Bousman did not have a clear vision of the universe in which he wanted Abattoir to be set, which may have to do with the fact that this is an adaptation of a comic (not read by the way), which is somewhat less limited. Unbalanced, as was said below, and that is exactly how I experience it. Unfortunately leaning towards the negative side.

The beginning is quite chaotic and you don't get much of a handle on the different characters.
The family tragedy in the beginning in particular should make the film exciting, but because the characters remain vague, the carnage does not matter much to the viewer. Unfortunately, the story does not improve afterwards despite an original approach to the genre.
A collector of ghosts. Towards the place of all disaster, the film becomes a bit better and the viewer gets more answers to the vague concept, because before that it is just a chaotic construction of a story that you gradually get into. sleep begins to rock. Jessica Lowndes does a nice job as the main character and Dayton Callie is in his element. The rest of the cast didn't bother me either.
The atmosphere is also good. But it is certainly not exciting and the horror is also hard to find. And if the story is disappointing, then I have no choice but to give this film a failing grade. 4/10

A mediocre horror film with Jessica Lowndes and Dayton Callie. They were previously seen together in The Devil's Carnival.

The story is interesting, but the effect is a disaster. There is no chemistry at all between Jessica Lowndes and Joe Anderson. Not to mention Anderson's bad accent. The production design is perhaps the only positive thing about this film. In 2023, there still seems to be talk of a sequel under the title "The Dwelling." As far as I'm concerned, they should spare themselves this trouble.

1.5 *
