Trumbo tells the story of screenwriter Dalton Trumbo (Bryan Cranston) and his stance against the communist witch hunt at the height of the Cold War. He is mistaken for a communist and imprisoned for 11 months for contempt of Congress. He also fights against columnist Hedda Hopper (Helen Mirren), who despises communism.

A good drama/biopic movie. Good story. Good acting.
Nice HD quality widescreen. Nice old fashioned recording.

After three corny Austin Powers, two mediocre Meet the Parents and a horrific remake of Dinner for Schmucks, director Jay Roach shows a slightly different side with more dramatic and political dramas, albeit always with an accessible and light touch here and there. Trumbo is a good example of this. The film is a charming and very solid biography, which is not surprising, but tells a fine and interesting story. The script is - as is often the case with biographical films - sometimes a bit on the fragmentary side, the script regularly hops from event to event. The biggest plus of Trumbo is the strong cast. Cranston plays an excellent lead and is assisted by a Diane Lane, John Goodman, Stephen Root, Alan Tudyk and a surprising Louis CK. Only Helen Mirren was not too strong, but that could also be due to her somewhat sparsely written role.
3.5 stars.

Good film about a successful screenwriter who is blacklisted because of his ties to communism. Certainly not the first film about this black page in Hollywood history. Still, the film certainly remains entertaining, and the second half where Donald Trumbo continues to work under various aliases is the best part. The cast does not disappoint. Easily 3.5 stars.

It was a bit of a movie you have to get into, but the movie did grow and get better as it progressed.
The story was not known to me, so it was interesting to have seen. The cast did a great job and the movie looked good.

Great film about one of the darkest periods in American history, although they are now well on their way again, the blacklist in the fifties. Screenwriter Dalton Trumbo was one of the first to come on the list and this is, in a just under two hours, his more than ten years of struggle against it.
And although there are undoubtedly facts and events that remain, director Jay Roach (best known for the Austin Powers movies and the first two Meet the Parents films) has nevertheless managed to come up with a strong film.
In the first place responsible for this is Bryan Cranston who plays an excellent title role. His performance alone ensures that Trumbo is a lot more than simply stating the facts.
He is supported in this by Louis CK, John Goodman, Hellen Mirren and Diane Lane, among others, who are all more than convincing in their roles. And the same goes for the actors who played the zipper of well-known Hollywood stars, although Dean O'Gorman was as Kirk. Douglas actually the only one who also showed a considerable physical resemblance.
Furthermore, despite the heavy subject matter, the film also had quite light moments and it was also striking that it became more and more fascinating to me as time passed.
Trumbo is definitely recommended and at least good for four stars.
Finally, I would like to express my admiration for Otto Preminger and Kirk Douglas for sticking their necks out and supporting these wrongly accused writers, actors and directors (and then in the first instance of course Trumbo himself) despite threats against them.

Trumbo's story was not well known to me. This biographical film really captivated me. As a member of the Communist Party, Trumbo was persecuted in a witch hunt led by champions of American values such as John Wayne and the influential columnist Hopper. The stigma was so heavy that fellow citizens regarded him as a pariah, the film industry no longer wanted to work with him and at the bottom he even had to spend 11 months in prison. It's a bit odd to see actors playing Kirk Douglas, Otto Preminger and John Wayne; didn't know Wayne was such a clunky bastard. And as frolunda also says, Douglas and Preminger's support sparked admiration in me too. The whole smear campaign had painful consequences on Trumbo's family life and his ties to his "commie" friends. Well, as you can see, the US always wanted to be the defenders of noble standards and values, but didn't shy away from tarnishing them with dirty feet when it suited them. And in that respect it is still the same cake today. Well exposed film, one with content that actually made me wiser. It also helps that certain roles were really brilliant: Cranston, Goodman, Louis CK...
