The Houses October Built plot

Behind the cheap masks and fake blood of countless haunted houses across the country, there are rumors of truly terrifying alternatives. Five friends go in a campervan in search of an authentic, blood-curdling alternative to Halloween. Just when their search seems to be coming to a dead end, strange things start to happen. Looks like the ghosts found them.

mwa.

Not a high flyer in the genre and a slight disappointment. The design is quite nice, but the execution often leaves something to be desired. I had my expectations pretty high, but afterwards I'm relieved that I didn't spend any money on it.

Acting is quite good. Everyone plays neatly natural despite the fact that every character is pushed into a somewhat stereotypical corner. We actually see each type in a lot of similar films, so it lacks some uniqueness in the writing. Fortunately, the acting itself is good compensation.

It takes a long time for the movie to become a real horror movie. It is mainly a 70-minute tour through all kinds of haunted houses, which are therefore depicted in a found-footage-like way. The last 20 minutes have "real" horror again, but since that appears so late in the film you would think they might as well have stuck to the haunted houses.

The haunted houses are quite interesting and the film mainly holds its strength there. Many attempts at real horror fall flat and mainly come up with a number of silly ideas. An example is the figure depicted on the poster. What a silly sight that was.

The film is not too long and the pace is quite fast. The best parts are in the haunted houses themselves, because the real horror is just not that interesting. The film doesn't manage to stand out with anything. I also miss a bit of a Halloween atmosphere. That shouldn't be a problem in this kind of environment, and yet I didn't notice it very much. A missed opportunity.

Five friends decide to take a tour of some living haunted houses before Halloween, even though they hear rumors that some of the staff are people convicted of a violent crime. Amateurishly filmed diary promises all kinds of things, but does not deliver at all. Of course there are people walking around with scary make-up and masks, but the lack of stylization and tension building makes you wonder why this thing can call itself a horror film at all. If just the presence of a girl in a weird mask and a smeared teddy bear is enough to give you nightmares, then you've come to the right place. However, horror aficionados should avoid this like the plague.
