What a wonderful film.............

to skip.

Lousy acting and CGI that will make you shit your pants.

Only the leading actress shows that she has any interest in it and she succeeds to a certain extent.

I don't really consider the film a horror/mystery either...there are certainly worse films in this genre, but unfortunately, I can't give much for this one.

Moderate.

Italy seems to be catching up to Spain, which has also been trying to market its films for a while by choosing English as the main language. But those Spanish films can generally still rely on their own qualities, while the Italian ones tend to feel a bit cheap.

Neverlake is a film that manages to bring together a range of cliché elements in a relatively original way. The result isn't pure horror, but one supplemented with a touch of mystery and fantasy. However, the execution is somewhat lacking.

The visuals and soundtrack are okay on their own, but the combination is poor. The film feels cheaper than it initially looks and sounds. The editing is truly subpar, and the acting is also far from ideal. A classic problem when the director doesn't have a perfect command of the language (and I'll assume he does), the dialogue feels very angular and unnatural.

Once the truth is more or less clear (which is unfortunately a bit too soon), the film calmly connects the dots, leaving little of the mystery behind. It also falls a bit short in terms of horror, and the atmosphere is ruined by the actors' mediocre direction and poor editing.

It's not all that bad; the somewhat original approach is always fun, especially when you've already seen hundreds of horror films, but it could easily have been much better. Just by doing everything in Italian.

2.5*

Jenny is on vacation with her father in Italy. Near her residence lies The Lake of Idols, which holds a great attraction for her. A lake where many artifacts from the Etruscan period have been discovered. The lake and the surrounding area harbor a dark secret. Jenny is infected by it. She experiences strange visions and has strange encounters at the lake.

Neverlake is a quiet horror film. Perhaps a little too quiet. It takes a considerable time before it picks up any momentum. The deliberate narrative style sometimes makes it difficult to stay focused. On the other hand, the restrained pace reinforces the dark atmosphere. And there's something to be said for that. The downside is that by the end of the film, a lot needs explaining. Instead of a long monologue from one character, director Riccardo Poletti could have offered more fragmented explanations throughout the story. That would have been better for the balance between substance and atmosphere.

Not a bad story, by the way. Not terribly exciting, but intriguing at its core. The story makes ample room for lyricism. Percy Bysshe Shelley is Jenny's favorite poet, and motifs from his work are found throughout the film. It goes without saying that with such a lyrical approach, the film doesn't allow for gory details or other forms of hard-boiled horror. Neverlake is an atmospheric horror film that, as a fan of atmospherics, I found to veer a bit too far into the realm of atmospheric sensitivity.

Finally, the Lake of Idols actually existed under the Italian name Lago degli Idoli. Etruscan statuettes have actually been found in the lake. Today, the lake is a dried-up plain.
