Fans of The Misfits will have to wait until after the credits, but it's unlikely that fans of the 80s cartoon series of the same name on which this is based will be able to hold out that long. The completely unbelievable story concerns four musical foster sisters who become a worldwide sensation after posting a clip on YouTube. It's that easy! The slippery promoter Erica Raymond [Juliette Lewis] quickly reports and simsalabim, within no time the four sisters are playing every hall under their alter egos Jem & The Holograms. Synergy is a cute robot (R2D2 with a touch of Robin from Bassie & Adriaan) who searches for the sisters on a quest that seems to have something to do with the father of Jerrica/Jem [Aubrey Peeples]. The ladies can sing well and there are some nice songs, but as soon as they are on stage (with instruments) they fall flat, also because Chu makes no attempt to create a live atmosphere. That was clearly not the only thing for which there was insufficient budget. One of the most strange remakes of all time.

Chu's girl movie.

Jem and the Holograms seemed to me a film that was mainly criticized by fans of the cartoon series. These kinds of films often please me, only in this case it is really a mediocre film. Not really bad though, I think that the average of MovieMeter gives a fairly reliable picture.

The focus is on a number of ladies who all start a music career. Of course, this is their dream and they then succeed (very easily). It just doesn't feel like the ladies are encountering obstacles on their way to success, while their methods are not distinctive anywhere. Perhaps they can easily break through, but after about half the group seems to be giving colossal concerts. That goes very quickly.

Then they (it won't be) find out that the music world isn't entirely perfect and they get some setbacks. Setbacks that are never groundbreaking, by the way. The main problem I have with Jem and the Holograms is clearly evident there. The ladies never seem to have much conflict and a real sense of adventure is completely lacking.

Furthermore, the film has some nice musical scenes and decent scenes in which some science fiction is mixed with the world. I thought the film succeeded quite well in that, because although sometimes advanced, Chu refuses to make the transition to a completely artificial world and that was not necessary. In my opinion, it keeps the connection with the audience a bit direct.

Acting, although the characters are not very special, is still reasonable and I didn't think the songs were bad either. The flow is still quite nice and Chu definitely belongs in this world, but a real compelling or adventurous feeling is missing. If you believe this film, great success is only 3 minutes away from your door.

Credibility…

Let's just say right away that you shouldn't watch this movie for credibility. I honestly don't think the song she went viral with is that great. But that's not the worst part, haha. I think it's a shame that at one point they're also jamming on the beach and it's too obvious that they're lip-synching.

Animated series

Jem and the Holograms is based on the 80s animated series of the same name. From what I've read about that series, the film doesn't resemble it at all. It has elements of the TV series, but follows a completely different story and even the characters have been changed. The acting is okay, although we're used to better from everyone. However, I was annoyed to death by Juliette Lewis' character. The fact that it's just an exaggerated character, but how that is reinforced by how she portrays her.

Entertaining

In the end it is an entertaining film, as long as you don't have too high expectations. The music - on the song she goes viral with - is quite catchy. The story is far-fetched, especially when the robot appears on screen, but still fun enough. In addition, the film looks nice and professional, so it is fun to watch. Although I found the YouTube videos that come in between take away some of that professionalism.

Conclusion

Jem and the Hologram is fun for a while as long as you don't have too high expectations beforehand. The story is a bit far-fetched, the acting here and there a bit exaggerated - by some more than others -, and I also didn't really like the unprofessional movies in between. But everything is enough to watch the movie with pleasure. I do think it's a shame that they didn't go a bit deeper into the story. Although the mid-credits scene clearly hints at a sequel, I don't think it will happen.
