A good animation/adventure/family film...

Fairly quiet story...

Reasonably made animation...

Great background sound/music

(Dolby Digital)..

Beautiful HD quality widescreen...

Not top-notch, I see it's well-reviewed, but unfortunately...

This beautiful animated film begins intimately, gradually takes on epic proportions, and has a lovely, intimate ending. In this technically simple yet extremely imaginatively drawn world, a boy takes center stage who leaves his familiar surroundings in search of his father. Wonder at other people, imposing machines, and other forms of technology predominates, but the boy gradually discovers how all these elements influence one another. And by no means always in a good way.

The rudimentary animation of the characters helps you experience the journey of discovery from the boy's perspective. By presenting vehicles and machines, you frequently feel the same wonder as the protagonist, even if it is more due to the design than the content: tanks are elephants, a train is a caterpillar. Abreu's vision of the 'big world' is not all that rosy, but the moving ending shows that his faith in humanity and childlike innocence is unwavering. Truly a unique animated film, suitable for all ages.

The animation is very beautiful at times, but unfortunately, I find the whole thing just feels too empty in terms of plot/content and whatever else the film has to say. In that respect, it is too simplistic and insufficient for a feature film.
