Underrated

Low ratings within horror are often very difficult to estimate. I had recently ventured into Leatherface, which I dropped after a while because it was so cringe-inducing bad, but with The Bye Bye Man burned to the ground, I had a great evening, for example. So setting up a horror that scores below 5.5 on IMDB is always a risk, but sometimes these risks turn out to be surprisingly good. After all, a higher rating is never a guarantee for a good horror.

The Lazarus effect is definitely not a high-flyer, but this pleasant horror is well deserved as far as I'm concerned. The film is often tense, has a few nice scares and is nice and fast. Also, I was positively surprised that Zoe didn't just come back from hell, but from her personal version of hell. Would she have come back differently if she hadn't lit the fire in the past? The open and dark ending leaves room for further interpretation, as far as I'm concerned it was just a good move. Not everything always has to be chewed up to the viewer by means of sequels, sometimes it is more powerful if you can create your own idea in your head.

I sometimes wondered to what extent Zoe still came back as herself, and to what extent she was taken over by a supernatural entity, but this is also a film where you don't want to think too much. Zoe died, was brought back to life, and just came back fucked up, done. Sometimes you don't have to make it more complicated, and with the further elaboration it was fine.

3.5*

Surprised.

And that's always nice when you're lazily on Netflix. So without prior knowledge clicked this and actually there is little that the film really does wrong.

Excellent acting, especially for the role of Wilde it is still delicate but she manages to convince. Atmospheric from the start. Any comparison it evokes with Flatliners doesn't hurt the film; it's filled in a bit more fantastically here, but the tone is right (and it's not half as ridiculous).

Fairly exciting, a bit messy if the storyline and flashbacks have to form a whole but otherwise fine to watch, with fascinating characters and a handful of very nice moments. Like the moment of Wilde's resurrection. The squeezed locker with Glover is a favorite, went a little too fast in fact.

Pleasantly surprised, without standing over backwards; This one definitely deserves 3.5*.

Not too good. A succession of stereotypical horror moments. Unfortunately not that original. Raising from the dead has been filmed before.
