Little science, a lot of relationship drama. 'The Theory of Everything' (2014) gets away with it because it first outlines a fairytale romance between the unusual couple Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) and Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones), but their marital bliss takes a hit when the iconic physicist gets ALS . It's as much about how Stephen has to accept that he's losing his sense of masculinity as Jane is no longer able to thrive in this relationship and loses her freedom. (Although I read in interviews that it was actually a lot more grim than the biopic portrays, because in addition to being a faithful wife, Jane even had suicidal thoughts to escape her marital suffering. Not feel-good enough?) A very nice sketch of the atmosphere of the sixties , with many intense moments in which the two characteristic main characters find happiness in their imperfect lives.

Well, that someone gets such a horrible disease and also learns to live with it is in itself enough justification for a biopic, but that someone is also so brilliant that he is seen as one of the most important physicists of the world. twentieth century and continues with his pioneering work, that is of course unbelievable. Moreover, the sublime Eddie Redmayne shapes the physical decay so incredibly well that I'm just inclined to condone the fact that there is actually far too little of Hawking's work and ideas. Admittedly, those ideas aren't exactly light-hearted, and it might be hard to do them justice in a cinematic way, but anything more than this would have been welcome in my opinion.
