Christopher Nolan honoured Heath Ledger while accepting the Golden Globe award for Best Director.
At the Golden Globes ceremony this past weekend, Nolan won for directing Oppenheimer, which swept the majority of the major awards including Best Drama Picture, Best Actor in a Drama, Best Supporting Actor in a Drama and Best Supporting Actress in a Drama.
Upon accepting his award, Nolan mentioned that the only time he had previously stood on a Golden Globes stage was to accept a posthumous award for Ledger, who tragically passed away after the pair worked together on The Dark Knight.
"The only time I've ever been on this stage before was accepting one of these on behalf of our dear friend Heath Ledger, and that was complicated and challenging for me," the director recalled.
"And in the middle of speaking, I glanced up and Robert Downey Jr. caught my eye and gave me a look of love and support — the same look he's giving me now, the same love and support he's shown so many people in our community over so many years."
Nolan then thanked his crew and cast, including Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh.
"I thought it would be simpler accepting for myself, but as a director, of course, as I stand here, I suddenly realize I can only accept this on behalf of people. As directors, we bring people together and try to get them to give their best," he continued.
Murphy, Downey Jr. and Blunt all collected awards in their respective categories on the night also.
