Er wordt veel verwezen naar Sin City, maar zelf vond ik het eerder een ode aan de vroege Jim Jarmush (Stranger than paradise bvb), met een vette knipoog naar Only Lovers Left Alive. Daar is op zich niks mis mee, integendeel zelfs.

Waar het voor mij grondig misgaat is geloofwaardigheid en setting. Het verhaal speelt zich af in de (ok, fictieve) Iraanse stad Bad, die bestaat uit Amerikaanse straten, auto's huizen, industrie en duidelijk herkenbare Amtrak-treinen. De vampier trekt erop uit met een skateboard, luistert naar White Lies en Lionel Richie en haar vriendje eet hamburgers. You gotta be kidding me.

Mooie, strakke, kristalheldere B&W cinematografie, en +1 voor de kat.

Het einde laat inderdaad alle opties open, niet in het minst die van een sequel.

Net voor het einde, dicteert Yara een stuk uit The Idiot (Fyodor Dostoyevsky)
