Inspired by the saga of the hit fantasy novels A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin, this HBO drama series is set in a fantasy world where summers can last for years and winters can last a lifetime. Across the intriguing earths of the south, the wilds of the east, the frozen north, and up to the ancient Wall that protects the realm from the mysterious obscurity above, the powerful families of the Seven Kingdoms fight to claim the Throne of Westeros.

I think it's only after this season that the series really starts to get worth watching. The production values were already very high in previous seasons, but now the enormous scale really stands out.

I was very skeptical about this series at first. Fantasy/historical is an exhausting genre and all the praise is counterproductive for me. But gradually I came to appreciate it more and more. Not so much about the story, because I often have no idea (or just no interest) who exactly is doing what and why.

But more because it is a feast for the eyes: not only the sets and views, but also in terms of actors. Think it's amazing that the casting directors have been able to gather so many recognizable, characteristic heads. And then also excellent acting: even if you don't follow the dislocations for a while, it's still nice to see how the characters interact with each other.

Highlights of this season in my opinion are Tyrion on trial (exceptionally fine acting by Dinklage) and The Watchers on the Wall which, as previously indicated by aburefan, is Lord of the Rings- like proportions. Technically also very interesting: especially that 360 degree shot is very worthwhile.

Also this season I have seen a fairly high tempo for a second time. I can now conclude that the third and fourth seasons of Game of Thrones are the highlights as far as I'm concerned. I doubt the last three seasons will change that, but we'll see. I also increased the fourth season from 4.5 to 5 stars.

The season opens with a fairly calm, uplifting episode. What follows is a second episode that is almost as intense as a finale episode and immediately sets the tone for the entire season. From that moment on, the tension remains constant and I constantly wondered, especially of course the first viewing, how this would turn out. Normally, the season ends with a fierce ninth episode and a decreasing tenth episode. That is absolutely not the case here. The last three episodes keep coming with surprises and heavy scenes.

This season my favorite characters are again Tyrion, Tywin, but also The Hound. His chemistry with Arya is excellent. It was also nice to finally hear something about the Dorne region, a region that has been left out quite a bit until this season.
