I've put it off for a long time, but I've finally started re-watching Game of Thrones. In the run-up to the eighth and final season, I want to get the sea of information in this series in order. This time I'm watching it with my girlfriend, who has never seen the series. Nice to see how she has completely different thoughts about where certain storylines go. In the meantime, I also read the first book, which gave me new background information on certain characters in the series.

What a fantastic season this is still. When I started the series years ago (I think a few months before S2 came out), I devoured this season in a few days. This time it only took me a week. The characters, despite the fact that they are relatively little in the picture, are all interesting and the exciting writing ensures that you constantly want to know what happens next. Nice to now see all the references to events in later seasons and to focus more on characters who only have a bigger role later on.

What strikes me is that the characters are actually portrayed well from the start. That certainly applies to the children in the series, which is always a matter of waiting. In terms of acting, Jack Gleeson stands out the most for me. You absolutely hate that boy, but he plays that well. Kit Harington and Michelle Fairley also stand out immediately because of their acting.

The only thing that bothers me, and which doesn't really bother me in the form of a book, is the fact that enormous steps are taken in time. In movies and series, that always comes across a little less nice. I also found the production level a bit lower in this season than in the other seasons. The soldiers in Kings Landing in particular seemed a bit clumsy at times.

Game of Thrones was a great series based on George RR Martin's book series A Song of Ice and Fire. The title Game of Thrones refers to the war that arises between the different houses for the throne of the Empire of Westeros. Central are the scions of House Stark: Robb, Sansa, Brandon, Arya and Rickon and the bastard Jon Snow. Their father Eddard Stark was ruler of the North but is asked to become the King's hand (advisor). Daughters Sansa and Arya travel with him. Robb is the new ruler of the North. Jon Snow heads to the far North to become a watchman on the Wall. That wall is to protect the north from the savages and another great danger. The power of Game of Thrones was that nothing lasted. An ally today could join the enemy tomorrow. There were few characters who are sincere and honest. Most have butter on their heads and blood on their hands. Most poignant example is Catelyn Stark. Out of her motherly love, she takes an action that costs her husband's head and causes her family to fall apart. Later, she also undermines her son Robb's authority in an attempt to get her daughters back. Something that will ultimately prove fatal to him and her. So it's a series full of action, adventure, tension, intrigue, lies and deception, but also full of special peoples, strange creatures and beautiful characters. It should have gotten a big 5 but the denouement of the series in season 8 prevents this. Unfortunately, that has robbed the series of some of its brilliance.
