Van Vlees en Bloed plot

In the miniseries Van Vlees en Bloed the butcher family Vangenechten takes center stage. Business is going well in the butcher's shop until the only son of the butcher's couple suddenly shows up at the door after a long absence. He doesn't want to say anything about where he's been lately. He wants to come back to live at home and, moreover, he wants to work in the butcher's shop. His mother and grandmother want nothing more than to give the prodigal son a new chance, but for his father, André Vangenechten, the reconciliation is by no means obvious. Rudy's return sets off a chain reaction of events that leaves no one spared.

Yes, the bucket is full! But the ending of episode 7 is indeed the last straw; again the cold side (this time a bit too easily and without any explanation) is put to shit, just like in every episode before, there is no room for development - although it sometimes seems that way. That is not so bad, but it does mean that VveB will never become more than a soap opera at its core. A special one, in one way or another, but what exactly does it mean? A whole host of great headlines for what could have been a complete comedy series, but there are too many regular dramas to hit the nail on the head for that. Every now and then it even rubs against crime, but even there the series does not really get over the bridge.

At first I wasn't sure what to expect - each episode ended up being just more of the same. But I had a very nice time with it.

3.0*.

Viewing figures cannon and more than rightly so, rarely laughed so hard with a series as here. At the same time, the atmosphere of a small village is perfectly reproduced. Somehow a pity that no extra season(s) were made of this, there was certainly still room for it imo.

This is a so-called dramedy - a drama with comedic elements. In terms of content, it resembles a royal drama. Instead of a monarch with his own country, he is a small self-employed person with his own business, but the struggle for power and succession are comparable. The butcher's secrets and the past of his returned son cause some conflict.

The side characters are mainly responsible for the comedic side. Butcher Vangenechten and his wife are flesh and blood characters, but some of the local residents are more typical: the pleasant but nosy Herman, the schoolmaster-like brother-in-law Maurice and the autistic son Luc. Funny are the scenes with the dog, the exaggerated reactions to incidents, the witty statements and the nickname Bospooper.

There is a popular atmosphere, with regional accents, gossip and local scandals, befitting a provincial town in the Kempen. The name of the municipality is not mentioned, but it is included in Dessel, Mol and Retie. Some of the better Flemish actors are at work here. Tom Van Dyck wrote the screenplay together with Michiel Devlieger - better known as a presenter. The result is easily digestible, but not suitable for vegetarians.
