Tells the true story of how Nixon's own political saboteurs and Watergate masterminds, E. Howard Hunt and G. Gordon Liddy, accidentally overthrew the presidency they were trying to protect. In 1971, Egil "Bud" Krogh was summoned by John Ehrlichman, his mentor and chief confidant to President Richard Nixon, to a closed-door meeting in a remote White House office. Krogh thought he was walking into a meeting to discuss the drug-fighting program launched during his most recent trip to South Vietnam. Instead, he was given a file and responsibility for the SIU, Special Investigations Unit, which would later become infamous as "The Plumbers." The unit would investigate leaks of top-secret government documents, especially the Pentagon Papers, to the press. The president viewed this task as critical to national security. Nixon said he wanted the unit to be run by a "real bastard." Instead, he got the studious, industrious, and faithless Bud Krogh.
