The Path plot

The mysterious world of the cult-like sect the Meyerist movement. Eddie Lane and his devoted wife Sarah have converted to this Meyerism movement. But he begins to doubt his faith more and more, but also does not want to sever ties with his family. Cal Roberts is the charismatic face of the movement. He has a complicated relationship with Eddie and his wife Sarah, and struggles with inner demons and big ambitions as he tries to take his organization to great heights.

Seizoen 2 van The Path was in mijn beleving een kleine teleurstelling. Pakweg de eerste paar afleveringen heb ik nog met interesse zitten kijken maar langzaam begon ik te merken dat het steeds lastiger werd om mijn aandacht erbij te houden. Een belangrijk pluspunt is zeker dat de volledige cast uit het eerste seizoen weer terug keert maar helaas betekent dit niet dat de kwaliteit van de serie gehandhaafd blijft. Voornaamste storende factor vond ik dat vrijwel alle sterke punten van het eerste seizoen verdwijnen. De paradijselijke locaties worden minder gebruikt, de interessantste personages maken allemaal keuzes die ze niet bepaald sympathieker maken en wat overblijft is een langzaam voortkabbelend serie zonder enige relativering. De rust en het langzame tempo in combinatie met de mooie beelden waren juist de kracht van het eerste seizoen maar hier zijn de verhaallijnen een stuk minder goed uitgewerkt waardoor de acteurs ook veel krampachtiger overkomen. Alleen Rockmond Dunbar in de rol van de undercover agent met een gewetensconflict was de positieve uitzondering. Zijn acteerwerk was indrukwekkend en hij krijgt hier meer ruimte dan in het eerste seizoen. Wat daarnaast ook niet helpt is dat de nieuwe personages weinig tot niets toevoegen en de serie alleen maar zwakker maken. Ik heb dit seizoen uitgezeten omdat ik hoopte dat er nog iets van een climax zou komen en omdat ik simpelweg wilde weten hoe het verder zou gaan maar na het zien van de laatste aflevering bleef ik toch met een gevoel van teleurstelling achter. Incidenteel zit er nog wel een goed nummer op de soundtrack maar ook dat is in vergelijking met seizoen 1 een stuk minder. Ik ben nu begonnen aan seizoen 3 maar mijn verwachtingen zijn niet al te hoog.

Season 2 of The Path was a minor disappointment in my experience. Roughly the first few episodes I watched with interest but slowly I started to notice that it was becoming increasingly difficult to keep my attention.

An important plus is certainly that the full cast from the first season returns, but unfortunately this does not mean that the quality of the series will be maintained. The main disturbing factor I found is that almost all strong points of the first season disappear. The paradisiacal locations are used less, the most interesting characters all make choices that don't exactly make them more sympathetic and what remains is a slowly rippling series without any relativity.

The peace and slow pace in combination with the beautiful images were the strength of the first season, but here the storylines are a lot less well developed, making the actors appear much more convulsive. Only Rockmond Dunbar in the role of the undercover cop with a conflict of conscience was the positive exception. His acting was impressive and he gets more space here than in the first season.

What also doesn't help is that the new characters add little to nothing and only make the series weaker. I finished this season hoping for some climax and simply wanting to know how it would go on, but after watching the final episode I was left with a sense of disappointment.

Incidentally, there is still a good song on the soundtrack, but that is also a lot less compared to season 1.

I have now started season 3 but my expectations are not too high.
