Quiz Me Quick (2012)

Very good series with high level acting by just about everyone, special mention for Tine Embrechts as bossy wife of de Luc. And also Kevin Janssens who knows things like "antananarivo".

Story knows how to bring together a very diverse group of people in an improbable yet very natural way in what can be called one of the best hobbies since time immemorial, quizzes. But it goes further than that, the quizzes are just a stepping stone to get various life stories told. And the series succeeds wonderfully in that.

Quizzing is a good subject for a series. It provides a game element and it gives the five main characters a goal: to achieve the Superprestige. Putting everything into lists and learning by heart - listomania - can become an obsession. One can become a walking encyclopedia of trivial facts, of did you know. A fanatical quip can have autistic traits. The five also have a life outside of the quiz. Their partners, their private and professional perils, provide side intrigue and psychological support.

It contains some flashbacks, especially around the "Paris Horse". The fragment from the IQ quiz appears real, but is staged. The voice of Herman Van Molle can be heard in it. In the last episode, this god of quizmasters has a guest role. Nick's daydreams are also nice interludes. Crosscutting is sometimes used between the different storylines to jump back and forth between simultaneous events. It takes place in everyday environments: a cafe, a school, a sheltered workshop, a small business...

The five team members are well cast. They have a headline that fits their character well. Among the female opponents, Clara Cleymans stands out as the intelligent nymphomaniac. Also striking is Joy Anna Thielemans, who suddenly withdrew from public life five years ago. Bart De Pauw gave himself the role of an arrogant bully in a yellow tracksuit.

During the credits, a cityscape of Tienen can be seen with the two medieval towers. There are also station signs of unsightly Belgian villages. Finally, a quiz question: Who sang the song Kiss Me Quick in 1962? Elvis Presley.
