Nicholas Nickleby plot

Nicholas Nickleby and his sister Kate have been left penniless after the death of their father. An untrustworthy uncle comes to their aid. He gives the daughter shelter, because her charming appearance can attract new investments. Nicholas is sent to a school as a French teacher, where the children are severely abused and Kate can work as an apprentice seamstress. But it soon becomes apparent that brother and sister are not exactly getting any better from their new jobs. Nicholas hangs out with a crippled boy who works as a servant and wants to seek freedom with him.
