When a piece of her writing gains acclaim online, Arabella Essiuedu — easily distracted, noncommittal, and carefree — feels hailed as the "voice of her generation." But when she is sexually abused in a nightclub, her life changes irreversibly and Arabella is forced to reassess everything: her career, her friends, even her family. As she struggles to come to terms with what has happened, Arabella embarks on a journey of self-discovery.

Multi-talented Michaela Coel wrote, produced, co-directed and starred I May Destroy You. Like a new Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag). I already thought Coel acted very well in Black Earth Rising, here she surpasses herself. As a loudly annoying twitter queen, who struggles with writer's block after the first book, she constantly drugs herself with pills, coke and spirits. London life seems like one big party until someone puts something in her drink and rapes her. At least that's what she remembers (not). In a number of uncomfortable scenes the boundaries of transgressive behavior are then explored, not only by Coel, but also by her two best-friends. The 12 half-hour episodes are solid, but the constant worrying, vague philosophizing and in-depth analysis will certainly irritate the first episodes. And although the reason for the series is taken from Coel's own life, the hedonistic lifestyle is a bit further away from me. I was looking forward to this series after all the good reviews. They are only realized in the second half. I May Destroy You feels like a whole bag of licorice that you eat in one sitting. English licorice, yes.
