Gentleman Jack plot
In 1832, after a long period of travelling, studying and climbing the social ladder, Anne Lister returns to Shibden Hall, her ancestral home in West Yorkshire. To restore Shibden Hall to its former glory, Anne must reopen her coal mines and get married. The charismatic and purposeful Anne Lister - who has dressed her head in black and enjoyed her way to the higher realms - has no intention of marrying a man. True to her own nature, she plans to marry a woman. And not just any woman: The woman Anne Lister marries must be seriously rich.

Female love early 19th century
The costume drama Gentlemen Jack tells the story of Anne Lister: an English landowner, businesswoman, and diary writer. Lister kept highly detailed diaries for years. In them, she wrote—sometimes in code—about, among other things, her relationships with women, her finances, travels, and business activities. Gentlemen Jack provides a fine snapshot of the life of a woman who shaped her lesbian identity and relationships relatively openly. Set against the backdrop of the burgeoning mining industry and the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, creator Sally Wainwright (Happy Valley, Last Tango in Halifax) and actress Suranne Jones (as Anne Lister) have created a strong piece of woman entertainment. Not only does the (rather lighthearted) drama surrounding Lister's identity stand out, but her leadership also serves as an example: direct, clear, and empathetic.
