Beverly Hills 90210, the neighborhood where a group of wealthy teenagers live who all attend West Beverly Hills High School and later on to California University. The teens become friends and enemies, fall in love and break up, and work together through crisis after crisis.

Beverly Hills Nainoowtoewanoow was a popular series with teen idols, trendy haircuts and trendy outfits. The number in the title is the zip code of an affluent neighborhood in Los Angeles. It dealt with problems at school, between friends and in the family, but there were also episodes about vacation lovers at the beach. Banal teenage quarrels were discussed, but also heavier themes such as AIDS, health, teenage pregnancy and addiction. Because they aimed at a young audience, it never became explicit in terms of language use, sex or violence.
Shannen Doherty had a reputation as the unruly brat who showed up late to the set, but as the rebellious, dark-haired Brenda, she could make the screen burst with emotion. Jennie Garth played her blonde frenemy Kelly, the queen bee and spoiled brat who made the boys swoon. Tori Spelling, daughter of producer Aaron, played her minion Donna. Andrea was the wallflower with the good reports. What’s nice is that these characters try to transcend their characterizations by sometimes doing the opposite of what you might expect.
Jason Priestley and Luke Perry looked like James Dean wannabes. They played cool guys with a surfboard, a motorbike or a fast car, but also showed their soft side in conversations about friendship, growing up and family. Jim Walsh, father of twins Brendan and Brenda, earned a living as an accountant but also helped out around the house. The 90s were the era of the New Man. An episode often ended with a reconciliation or a life lesson. A generation of teenagers grew up with it.
