Breathtaking natural beauty, tolerant, safe and prosperous. That is the image we have of Canada in the Netherlands. But is it really so paradisiacal, or does the land of Trudeau mainly know how to put on a civilized mask? Writer Emy Koopman travels from Vancouver to Montreal in Paradise Canada to see what problems are brewing beneath the surface. The series delves into all the pressing issues of our time and examines Canada's current state of racism and gender equality, migration, climate change and the welfare state. Emy Koopman speaks to famous Canadian intellectuals such as Charles Taylor, Margaret Atwood and Jordan Peterson.

Erg veel van geleerd over prangende issues in Canada. De aflevering 'Giftige Mannelijkheid' kreeg de meeste media-aandacht omdat er interviews inzaten met Jordan Peterson en Margaret Atwood, maar eerlijk gezegd voelde dat een stuk minder urgent dan andere afleveringen. Alsof de aflevering vooral gemaakt was rond die twee tegenstrijdige denkers en de andere interviews erbij leken gezocht. In dat opzicht zijn 'Verdwenen Vrouwen' en 'De Prijs van Zwart Goud' voor mij 't hart van deze serie, omdat beide afleveringen zo scherp 't verborgen leed in beeld brengen van de oorspronkelijke bevolking. Met 'Booming Vancouver' en 'Een Nieuw Vaderland' prikt ze laatste mythes door over gidsland Canada als een linkse utopie. Het helpt dat Emy Koopman een fantastische interviewster is in hoe ze een warme, gevoelige band opbouwt met de mensen die ze portretteert. Een beetje frêle en aftastend, maar ook zij wordt geraakt door de verhalen en ze moet soms zelf grenzen over om bij de kern te komen. Of ze achterop gaat zitten bij een clubje motorvrouwen of in een bootje stapt met een ietwat zonderlinge meneer, die niet gediend is van kritische vragen over de olie-industrie. En dat terwijl Koopman zelf zo integer is om bijvoorbeeld een helikoptervlucht af te slaan als ze vindt dat deze keuze afbreuk zou doen aan haar milieu-standpunt. Ze heeft iets oprechts waardoor 'Paradijs Canada' spannendere televisie wordt dan soortgelijke reisprogramma's.

Learned a lot about pressing issues in Canada. The episode "Toxic Masculinity" got the most media attention because it featured interviews with Jordan Peterson and Margaret Atwood, but honestly, it felt a lot less urgent than other episodes. As if the episode was mainly made around those two conflicting thinkers and the other interviews seemed to be wanted. In that respect, 'Disappeared Women' and 'The Price of Black Gold' are the heart of this series for me, because both episodes so sharply portray the hidden suffering of the original population. With 'Booming Vancouver' and 'A New Fatherland' she shatters the latest myths about Canada as a left-wing utopia. It helps that Emy Koopman is a fantastic interviewer in how she builds a warm, sensitive bond with the people she portrays. A bit frail and probing, but she is also touched by the stories and she sometimes has to cross borders herself to get to the core. Whether she sits on the back of a group of motorcyclists or gets into a boat with a somewhat eccentric gentleman, who is not served by critical questions about the oil industry. And that while Koopman herself has the integrity to, for example, decline a helicopter flight if she believes that this choice would harm her environmental position. There's something heartfelt about it that makes 'Paradise Canada' more exciting television than similar travel shows.

Emy Koopman goochelt niet met cijfermateriaal maar onderzoekt op uiterste gemoedelijke, charmante manier, met veel bevragingen, zowel bij bekende figuren als bij de gewone man of vrouw, die natuurlijk doorgaans aan de klaagmuur staat, of Canada wel zo'n paradijselijk land is. Uiterst interessant en heel vaak met mij totaal nieuwe bevindingen, maar het had mij verbaasd indien de discriminatie die ontstaat bij thema's als vooringenomendheid tegenover bevolkingsgroepen, de macht van het kapitaal, de welwillendheid waarbij overheden hun ogen sluiten voor onrecht, de pollutie...ook niet in dit land zouden zijn opgedoken. Misschien ware een zesde aflevering die de "hoegrootheid" van al die thema's had getoetst op wereldvlak en aan andere landen wenselijk geweest, maar dan zitten we weer met cijfers en nu was het toch aangenaam, leerrijk kijken. Ook Canada, dus.

Emy Koopman does not juggle numbers, but investigates in an extremely pleasant, charming way, with many questions, both with well-known figures and with the common man or woman, who of course usually stands at the wailing wall, whether Canada is such a paradise country.

Extremely interesting and very often completely new findings with me, but I was surprised if the discrimination that arises from themes such as prejudice against population groups, the power of capital, the benevolence in which governments close their eyes to injustice, pollution...also would not have appeared in this country.

Perhaps a sixth episode that had tested the "quantity" of all those themes on a global level and against other countries would have been desirable, but then we are back with numbers and now it was pleasant, instructive to watch.

So Canada too.
