It has now been ninety years since the Afsluitdijk was completely closed, and the wild Zuiderzee changed for good into the peaceful IJsselmeer. This brought an end to a unique culture. Huub Stapel delves into the history of the Zuiderzee from its glory years in the Golden Age to the most recent developments in the current IJsselmeer. He is investigating what the construction of the Afsluitdijk meant for the former coastal inhabitants of the Zuiderzee. What was it like to be affected by the government's drastic decision to tame a sea? Huub Stapel speaks with both experts and direct descendants of the former coastal inhabitants. Descendants of Zuiderzee fishermen, fishermen's wives, dike workers and pioneers of the new land tell the stories they have learned from tradition.
