Chimp Empire plot

Under the lush treetops of Uganda's Ngogo Forest, scientists and researchers have lived alongside a tribe of chimpanzees for the past 25 years. They have seen them build a sophisticated political and familial structure by forming alliances, building trust, caring for each other, and often battling each other in a never-ending fight for power. Reed and his team took a camera crew to get an intimate look at Ngogo's chimpanzees, who have endured some of the most tumultuous battles and dramatic changes in the tribe's history.

At four episodes, it is just a little too long and repetitive, but overall this is a fascinating, beautifully filmed documentary series about two groups of chimpanzees in Uganda's Ngogo Rainforest. Mahershala Ali's professional voice-over is also excellent. The chimpanzees are followed and filmed in an incredibly intimate manner, without giving the impression that the animals' privacy is being invaded. Very cleverly done.

I never used to be particularly fond of chimpanzees; I always found them somewhat unsympathetic and noisy animals. But while watching this series, I had to drastically revise my opinion. From the very beginning, I was fascinated by their behavior and the way they view the world, beautifully captured by the makers of this documentary series. I found those facial expressions, filmed up close, so intriguing at times that I frequently rewound the film.

That spark of budding consciousness and their understanding of the world around them… And the young chimpanzees sometimes looked just like children. The patrols were almost eerie: when they went on the “warpath,” without making a sound, with that calculated, waiting observation to see if they could spot the enemy. I understand Jane Goodall better now, too, when she said that we gain more insight into our own behavior by studying chimpanzees. Beautiful shots of the cloud forest and the other animals as well.
