New Tricks plot

Inspector Sandra Pullman is put in charge of unsolved crimes. With few resources and no backup, she decides to hire three ex-cops. But times have changed, unlike her new recruits. Jack Halford has yet to come to terms with the loss of his wife, Brian Lane is obsessed and too medicinal, and Gerry Standing isn't quite the ladies man he once was. They may have the experience, but it's not like the old days. Not only do they hunt criminals, but they also have to deal with a new police force that doesn't always like their old style policies.

A comic English detective series about 3 retired detectives who solve unsolved old murder cases or cold cases under the direction of Inspector Sandra Pullman (Amanda Redman). Pullman has quite a bit of trouble holding the 3 elderly men, each with their own manual, while solving things at the same time. Brian Lane (Alun Armstrong) for example has a great memory but at the same time he is also a barrel full of mental problems such as OCD, Asperger's, depression and alcoholism. Jack Halford (James Bolam) is the best detective of the bunch, but also a man who stood still in the 1950s. He doesn't want to know anything about modern technology. Gerry Standing (Dennis Waterman) is the cock of the bunch. An overage womanizer who still thinks he's a young god. The series has the same premise as the Cold Case series, but unlike that series no flashbacks and therefore more straightforward. It is thanks to the strong cast that have a good chemistry with each other and the character development they undergo comes into play so that you empathize with them that form the strength of this series. Something that was lacking in Cold Case, where the protagonists remained dull and the chemistry between them was barely there. Unfortunately, New Tricks went through changes in the cast from season 9 onwards, which meant that the chemistry that had been its strongest asset up to that point was lost. In particular, the character Danny Griffin, who came in as a replacement for Brian Lane, was completely over the top and especially bloody annoying. An autist who knew everything just like Brian but also as a savant mastered everything very quickly, making his character also unbelievable. Nevertheless, New Tricks is a nice series that combines humor and tension, such as Death in Paradise.
