Maniac plot

Maniac tells the story of Annie Landsberg and Owen Milgrim, two strangers who follow a mysterious medical process, each for a different reason. Annie goes through life aimlessly and dissatisfied after losing contact with her mother and sister. Owen, the fifth son of a wealthy New York family, has struggled with schizophrenia all his life. Their lives are not going as they planned and only the arrival of a new, radical treatment in the medical world could restore their brains.

Flinke tegenvaller, vooral van regisseur Cary Joji Fukunaga, die zich geen raad lijkt te weten met de toon en de structuur van deze rommelige, nogal saaie miniserie. De plot komt nergens lekker op gang en de maffe personages komen niet uit de verf. Hier en daar wat verdwaalde sterke scenes, maar uiteindelijk blijft de boel hangen in goede bedoelingen.

Big disappointment, especially from director Cary Joji Fukunaga, who doesn't seem to know what to do with the tone and structure of this messy, rather dull miniseries. The plot doesn't really get going anywhere and the wacky characters don't come out well. Here and there some stray strong scenes, but in the end things get stuck in good intentions.

"Wat voor verknipte, psychedelische jaren 80 setting serie heb ik in vredesnaam gekeken?" is nu het gevoel wat het meest leeft. Het deed me vaak denken aan Legion (Serie, 2017 - 2019) - MovieMeter.nl. In principe leuk gemaakt, al werd het voor mij persoonlijk pas interessant vanaf aflevering 4. Acteerwerk is (zoals vaker aangegeven door anderen) erg sterk! Het verhaal is en blijft mijns inziens wat verwarrend. Ook merkte ik dat ik me vaak ergerde aan bepaalde scènes en het tempo. Al met al wat mij betreft geen uitmuntende serie. 3*

"What on earth have I watched psychedelic 80s setting series?" is now the feeling that is most alive. It often reminded me of Legion (Series, 2017 - 2019) - MovieMeter.nl. Nicely made in principle, although it only became interesting for me personally from episode 4. Acting is (as often stated by others) very strong! I think the story is a bit confusing. I also noticed that I was often annoyed by certain scenes and the tempo.

All in all, not a great series in my opinion. 3*

Grappig, ik wilde net in mijn bericht over deze reeks Legion aanhalen, zie ik dat de persoon hierboven ook die associatie ervaart. Ik ben dus niet de enige, en vermoed zelfs dat de makers van Legion ook wat inspiratie hebben gehaald uit het Noorse origineel (al heb ik dat nooit gezien). Deze miniserie stond al een tijdje op mijn radar, zowel door de commentaren die ik erover heb gelezen (moest wel iets zijn dat in m'n straatje lag) als hoofdrolspelers Emma Stone en Jonah Hill. En dan heb ik vooral van Hill best een opmerkelijk sterke prestatie gezien. De eerste twee episodes vormen een fraaie inleiding en tonen ons al een interessante blik in de psyche van Annie en Owen, de twee hoofdpersonages. Daarna barst de boel helemaal los, als een soort caleidoscopische tocht doorheen getroebleerde zielen. Er kan wellicht heel veel betekenis/symboliek gezocht worden achter de talloze referenties en connecties in de serie, ik heb het vooral proberen bekijken als een soort psychedelische ervaring ((alsof ik zelf zou meedoen aan medische proeven), en dat werkte best goed. Toch heeft de reeks ook zijn tekortkomingen, want in de eclectische drang naar creativiteit slaat de slinger soms wat door. Ook is de humor bij momenten wel erg flauw. Al bij al heb ik me prima vermaakt met deze reeks, en zullen bepaalde scènes me nog behoorlijk lang bijblijven (zoals de geweldige confrontatie tussen de maki-dieven van Furs by Sebastian en het Fish & Wildlife-korps, wel erg verlekkerd over het feit dat ze eindelijk eens in actie mogen komen). 3,5 sterren

Funny, I just wanted to quote Legion in my post about this series, I see that the person above also experiences that association. So I'm not the only one, and even suspect that the creators of Legion also took some inspiration from the Norwegian original (though I've never seen that).

This miniseries has been on my radar for a while, both because of the comments I've read about it (should be something up my alley) and lead actors Emma Stone and Jonah Hill. And then I have seen a remarkably strong performance from Hill in particular.

The first two episodes are a nice introduction and already show us an interesting glimpse into the psyche of Annie and Owen, the two main characters. Then things really explode, like a kind of kaleidoscopic journey through troubled souls. Perhaps a lot of meaning/symbolism can be found behind the countless references and connections in the series, I mainly tried to view it as a kind of psychedelic experience ((as if I would participate in medical trials myself), and that worked quite well, but the series also has its shortcomings, because in the eclectic urge for creativity the pendulum sometimes swings a bit, and the humor is also very bland at times.

All in all, I had a great time with this series, and certain scenes will stay with me for quite some time (like the great showdown between Furs by Sebastian's lemur thieves and the Fish & Wildlife Corps, though very fond of the fact that they can finally take action).
