Breeders plot

Paul and Ally juggle full-time careers, aging parents, a mortgage, changes in their relationship and the unenviable difficulties of raising their young children, Luke and Ava. When Ally's estranged father shows up at the door, the family essentially adopts a third child - but this comes with extra baggage and a mind of its own. Paul's own parents, Jackie and Jim, are ready to help, but their generation sees parenthood a little differently.

The comedy Breeders revolves around young parents. But the relationships with their own parents and colleagues are also told in a light-hearted and sometimes farcical way in 10 short episodes of more than 20 minutes. Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard are the struggling couple with children, but Freeman (who co-developed the series) in particular doesn't seem completely believable in his young father role. Although a great actor (A Confession!) the 20 jokes per minute format is an overkill that our Hobbit only seems to be able to respond to with over-acting. It is sometimes very corny and bland. That's a shame because the themes around parenthood are recognizable and lend themselves perfectly to a light but serious approach. The second half of Breeders is less light-hearted, more reflective and more melancholic. Breeders immediately gains in expressiveness. Swedish counterpart is Bonusfamiljen. Compared to that, Breeders falls short on points. Fortunately, there is still plenty to enjoy, in familiar British quality.

Martin Freeman is supposed to play a young parent here, but looks like he just became a grandpa: Talk about a miscast. Furthermore, the constant whining of the small children did not warm me very much. It takes courage and persistence to start the second episode.
