The Onedin Line plot
Captain James Onedin marries Anne Webster to acquire the Charlotte Rhodes, a schooner owned by her father. Despite the marriage of convenience, it turns out to be a good marriage. Business goes well for James and he eventually becomes the owner of a fleet of 25 sailing ships. His brother Robert partners with him to manage the affairs ashore while James is at sea. Anne also regularly goes on business trips. Meanwhile, the sailing ships are increasingly supplanted by steam ships, which can sail faster. James' sister Elizabeth marries shipbuilder Albert Frazer, who goes along with the new technology of steamships and makes a fortune as a result. This leads to a fierce competition between James and his sister.
