One Piece plot

Ruthless murdering pirates rule the seas, and only the strongest have a chance to lay claim to the mythical treasure known as 'One Piece' left behind by the greatest pirate of them all, Gol D. Roger. Years after Roger's death, a young boy named Monkey D. Luffy dreams of raising his own crew, finding One Piece, and proclaiming himself the pirate king. After eating a devil fruit which gives Luffy the power to make his body like rubber, it gives him immense strength and agility. When Luffy finally grows up, he departs from Foosha Village in East Blue and embarks on his grand adventure to become the next pirate king.

Ik ben niet bekend met de originele anime en heb ook geen trailers vooraf gekeken dus ben er compleet blind mee begonnen. Maar dat dit een adaptatie is van een Japanse manga is direct duidelijk; excentrieke karakters, kleurrijke sets, en maffe logica waar geen touw aan vast te knopen is. Maar het werkt allemaal, nét, wonderbaarlijk genoeg. Ik denk echter wel dat je enigszins bekend moet zijn met het bronmateriaal om de absurditeit volledig te kunnen waarderen, soms voelt het allemaal te willekeurig aan; terwijl het waarschijnlijk allemaal ergens op gebaseerd is maar simpelweg geen tijd is om meer achtergrond info te geven. Ik denk dat als je een fan bent van de originele Wan Pīsu - Seizoen 1 (1999) dat je er veel meer uit zult halen, zowel visueel als inhoudelijk; als nieuwkomer is het een vrij stugge instapper. Ik vond Cowboy Bebop - Seizoen 1 (2021) makkelijker om in te komen, die helaas na 1 seizoen al geannuleerd is. Ik weet niet wat de kijkcijfers gaan worden, maar ondanks dat ik niet weggeblazen was zou een tweede seizoen niet geheel ongewenst zijn; tegen het einde aan begon ik toch wel behoorlijk te hechten aan de hoofdpersonages. Ik zie dat Mza alweer 1* heeft uitgedeeld, je kon er niets positiefs uit halen?

I'm not familiar with the original anime and haven't watched any trailers beforehand so I went into it completely blind. But it is immediately clear that this is an adaptation of a Japanese manga; eccentric characters, colorful sets, and crazy logic that makes no sense. But it all works, just, miraculously enough. However, I do think you need to be somewhat familiar with the source material to fully appreciate the absurdity, sometimes it all feels too arbitrary; while it is probably all based on something but there is simply no time to give more background info.

I think if you are a fan of the original Wan Pīsu - Season 1 (1999) you will get a lot more out of it , both visually and substantively; as a newcomer it is a fairly stiff slip-on. I found Cowboy Bebop - Season 1 (2021) easier to get into, which unfortunately has already been canceled after 1 season. I don't know what the ratings are going to be, but while I wasn't blown away, a second season wouldn't be entirely unwelcome; Towards the end I started to really get attached to the main characters.

I see that Mza has already handed out 1*, you couldn't get anything positive out of it?

HEERLIJK!! Wat is dit weer eens een leuke, goedgemaakte serie. Mooie beelden, top fantasie wereld / karakters en heerlijke humor. Ik heb volop genoten en zie uit naar meer. Oja… ik heb / ken geen verleden van de originele anime. Ik ging er zonder enige kennis in. Mijn puberzoon wist me halverwege de serie te vertellen wat het origineel was.

DELICIOUS!! What a fun, well-made series this is. Beautiful images, top fantasy world / characters and wonderful humor.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to more.

Oh yeah… I have/don't know any history of the original anime. I went into it without any knowledge. My teenage son managed to tell me halfway through the series what the original was.

Bijzonder onderhoudend verfilming. De meeste Netflix producties vind ik slecht to op zijn best matig, en dit is een prettige uitzondering. Hopelijk een opmaat naar meer verfilmingen,
