Todd has good instincts as a private investigator, but he lacks direction and is the black sheep of the family. After his wayward mother, Margaret, negotiated a criminal charge against Todd two years earlier, he reluctantly agrees to work at her law firm in Portland, Oregon, as a private investigator. Margaret believes in strict adherence to the law, which conflicts with Todd's tendency to bend the law to deal with tricky situations.
