Three Pines plot

Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Québec is called in to investigate a multiple murder case in the idyllic town of Three Pines, where everything seems ordinary. He is a man who sees things that others do not: the mysterious in the everyday and the evil in the apparently ordinary. As he investigates the spate of murders, he uncovers the town's secrets, but is also confronted with his own past.

Three Pines season 1

Three Pines (incorporated in Saint-Armand, Quebec) is a picturesque village in Canada. Inspector Armand Gamache's stories come from author Louise Penny. We're looking at a purebred whodunit. A crime is solved in four double episodes. The common thread in all eight episodes is the disappearance case of the native Blue Two-Rivers. Gamache, an excellent Alfred Molina, is reminiscent of super sleuths like Maigret, Jessica Fletcher and Dalgliesh. Gamache is empathetic, gives good advice, has no complexes (except bad dreams about the disappearance case, or is it a sixth sense?), a nice relationship with his wife and his heart is in the right place. As Karen Pirie; very simple, yet special.

The first double episode in a wintry 'Christmasy' Three Pines is immediately the best. But despite small references to Twin Peaks, Three Pines cannot maintain this high level. The Inuit and Kainai First Nation actors, together with the missing person story, form a beautiful homage to the indigenous Canadian population. A bit too good for me, but if you like British whodunits and a solid story that is attractively portrayed, then you will be served at your beck and call.
