The adventures of a boy named Finn and his magical yellow dog, Jake. Together they experience many adventures in the Land of Ooo, a post-apocalyptic world full of magical creatures, princesses, and all kinds of other special mutants. Where magic is born and almost anything is possible. Of course Finn is not just any boy! He is known as the last human in Ooo, because during the Mushroom War, a nuclear war that took place over a thousand years ago, most of humanity was wiped out.

Adventure Time with Finn & Jake season 1

On MovieMeter I recently wrote:

I have now watched two and a half seasons, and it is indeed a nice series. Very cheerful, with nice humor and a strange, colorful world that offers the makers plenty of room to give free rein to their creativity and imagination. The fast pace is also nice, although an episode is sometimes over too quickly. And there are some pretty dark episodes in between, although it usually remains quite lighthearted.

But I don't quite share the enthusiasm of The One Ring for the time being. The series has some very strong and resourceful episodes, but they are interspersed with a lot of episodes that are quite mediocre. Personally, I would rather have seen fewer episodes with a more consistent level than having to work through a lot of filler to discover the pearls. It's not bad, but it does ensure that my enthusiasm quickly stabilizes after a good episode.

Plus, it's all pretty childish. Finn is a bit of an ADHD kid with endless energy, who wants to go on an adventure all the time and doesn't shy away from a challenge, and the other characters are also quite caricatured. And the series does get a bit repetitive after a while. After the umpteenth adventure, and the umpteenth confrontation with The Ice King, you start longing for something new.

In short, it is a nice series, which because of the positive atmosphere is good for your mood and at times very creative, but the level could have been more constant and the highlights are (for now) a bit too rare.

Freak City is the best episode of the season in my opinion. The story is bizarre and surreal, and it has a very nice clue. Only that singing would not have been necessary for me. The season as a whole gets 3.25*. Just like the first season of Gravity Falls, it looks nice but there are few outliers.

Adventure Time with Finn & Jake season 1

I must confess that it was not immediately love between me and this busy, hyperactive series. It took some perseverance to learn to appreciate the surreal world and the crazy humor. But beneath the completely bizarre atmosphere is one of the sharpest animated series of recent times, with intelligent jokes and storylines that are well put together. Now that I have a soft spot for the main characters, I hope that the coming seasons will also be more fun. It's Adventure Time!
