Formidabele docureeks over de periode van de Koude Oorlog die vrijwel meteen na WOII aanvatte en die de wereld in zijn greep hield tot de ineenstorting van het communisme in 1991. De reeks vertelt het volledige verhaal, met zeer relevante uitweidingen en pittige details. De beelden zijn uniek en prachtig ingekleurd zodat het allemaal veel recenter lijkt dan het al is. De documentairemakers kregen kritiek omwille van het 'eurocentrisch narratief' terwijl dit net erg verfrissend aanvoelt. Wie de colleges op westerse universiteiten volgt, vooral in de menswetenschappen, zou bijna vergeten dat het communisme de meest moordzuchtige ideologie aller tijden is. Deze docu gaat dat feit niet uit de weg en legt haarfijn uit hoe kinderen hun eigen ouders aan de galg moesten praten, hoe honderdenduizenden Noord-Vietnamezen naar het zuiden vluchtten en smeekten om Amerikaanse hulp, hoe de economie instortte overal waar men over ging tot collectiviseringen, van Indochina over China tot de SU en hoe de communisten uiteindelijk een muur moesten bouwen om te vermijden dat iedereen het arbeidersparadijs ontvluchtte. De docu legt ook de vinger op een stinkende open wonde: de collaboratie van de linkse zgn. 'vredesbeweging' die met haar antirakettenretoriek een door de SU opgelegd en gefinancierd narratief promootte met als doel de verzwakking en uiteindelijk vernietiging van het westers blok. Ook Hollywood was een communistisch bolwerk, toen al en nu nog steeds. Chroestsjov werd er tussen het moorden door op handen gedragen. Ziekelijk en iets om nooit te vergeten of te vergeven. McCarthy had gewoon gelijk. Een aanrader voor iedereen die geïnteresseerd is in deze materie en open staat voor de echte geschiedenis van de Koude Oorlog en de gruwel van het communisme.

Formidable documentary series about the period of the Cold War that started almost immediately after WWII and that held the world in its grip until the collapse of communism in 1991.

The series tells the full story, with very relevant digressions and punchy details. The images are unique and beautifully colored so that it all seems much more recent than it already is. The documentary makers were criticized because of the 'Eurocentric narrative', while this just feels very refreshing. Whoever takes the lectures at Western universities, especially in the humanities, would almost forget that communism is the most murderous ideology of all time. This documentary doesn't shy away from that fact, explaining in great detail how children had to talk to their own parents on the gallows, how hundreds of thousands of North Vietnamese fled south and begged for American help, how the economy collapsed everywhere collectivizations took place. , from Indochina to China to the Soviet Union and how the communists eventually had to build a wall to prevent everyone from fleeing the workers' paradise. The documentary also points to a stinking open wound: the collaboration of the left-wing so-called 'peace movement', which with its anti-missile rhetoric promoted a narrative imposed and financed by the SU with the aim of weakening and ultimately destroying the Western bloc. Hollywood was also a communist stronghold, then and still is today. Khrushchev was admired in between the killings. Sickly and something never to be forgotten or forgiven. McCarthy was just right.

Highly recommended for anyone interested in this subject and open to the real history of the Cold War and the horror of communism.
