The Untouchables season 1

The story of Eliot Ness and his fight against organized crime in 1930s Chicago. At the time of the series' creation, Eliot Ness had recently passed away, a mere 20 years after the events that are the subject of this series. Just to say that at that time there was still a close social connection with the story. It is not without reason that the series is discussed - in film noir style - with the voice over by Walter Winchell, a journalist who was on the front row when reporting the historical events in the thirties.

Each episode has a tight script and for that time it is always very violent. Beautifully filmed in black and white, according to the film noir aesthetic. The styling of the costumes, cars and decor is just right, for me one of the best period pieces about the thirties. The acting is what it should be, with each episode featuring guest stars (or lesser known ones).

I absolutely love this series because of the subject matter, the relentless battle between cops and thugs, and the beautiful stylization. And then there's the brilliant soundtrack by Nelson Riddle, a more than capable composer and may I say genius arranger (which Frank Sinatra has also appreciated for his own work).
