Surviving in the ghettos of Chicago is anything but easy. Still, the Evans family tries to make the best of it. Florida and James do their best to make life as easy and pleasant as possible for their families. Son JJ wants to be a painter, son Michael wants to go into politics and causes the necessary problems and daughter Thelma is the wisest of them all. Together with friends and acquaintances they experience the necessary things.
