I, Claudius plot

I, Claudius portrays the lives of various Roman Emperors. It's a heroic tale of ruthless ambition, shocking and murderous excesses during one of the most fascinating eras in our history. The centerpiece of this epic is Claudius, who was initially labeled an idiot because of his limp, stutter and mild spasticity. Claudius defied this allegation and, despite many intrigues, developed as an outstanding leader of the Roman Empire!

In fact, I, Claudius begins where the 'Rome' series ends: with the regency of Emperor Augustus and his manipulative wife Livia. We experience the intrigue during the reigns of the first four Roman emperors, and we are introduced to unscrupulous opportunists, deceitful wives and inept, psychopathic emperors.

The series was made in 1976, and it shows. No outdoor shots were taken; the series was shot entirely in the studio with a variety of British stage actors, so at times I felt like I was watching a play being performed. I really had to struggle through the first two episodes; a huge amount of characters are introduced and it is, especially during the first two episodes, quite unclear how exactly the family ties are. Some prior knowledge of this Roman period is certainly not a luxury.

But then: from episode 3 the momentum is quite high, and a fantastic royal drama unfolds in which various main and secondary characters appear and then disappear from the scene again. The only constant factor is Claudius, who is left alone by all pretenders to the throne because of his supposed insufficiency, and therefore reaches a rather old age. Beautiful roles are played by Patrick Stewart as the ambitious army commander Seijanus, Siân Phillips as the manipulative Livia and John Hurt who exaggerates wonderfully as the crazy Caligula.

But the show is, of course, stolen by Derek Jacobi, who beautifully portrays Claudius as a limping, stuttering eccentric who ends up doing just fine as an unwilling emperor. Although in my opinion Jacobi should have put on the stutter, the stumbling and the tics a little less.

Nice series, which in my opinion deserves a modern remake.

This famous series is older than me by now, but I finally sat down for it, at least the first episode. It starts off well, with a poisoning. I got the strong impression that the beautiful comic series Murena was inspired by I, Claudius. The same kind of intrigue by devilish serpents as the Livia we are here, only Murena takes place during Nero.

The stage setting doesn't bother me. I also enjoyed the old BBC series King Arthur from a few years later (which had some outdoor scenes). The actors are, as usual for older BBC productions, excellent. There is also some typical English humor in the dialogues here and there. But the subject matter is very dark.

The way the narrator introduces you to the story is delightful. As if it was always intended that Claudius' memoirs would only be discovered in the 20th century. And in any case, if they were less well hidden, they would have been destroyed during the first century because of all the revelations of the most sordid secrets. Derek Jacobi also plays his role nicely right away, without saying a word in the first episode. I look forward to the rest, although it won't be bingen. This is not a bite-to-swallow fare, but meant for slow consumption.

A remarkably intense and grim production, in which the sometimes brutal scenes surrounding the Roman emperors are presented without mincing words, such as a decapitated child, sexual excesses, numerous poisonings, and other murders. We see many successors, from the jovial Augustus to Tiberius and the deranged Caligula, Claudius himself, and finally the transition of power to Nero. The whole thing is staged as a stage production with a limited set, which is nevertheless excellently designed and brought to life by the excellent actors. The makeup is also top-notch, and we see many of the actors gradually aging. Special mention should be made, alongside Derek Jacobi, of the then lesser-known John Hurt as the mad Caligula and Patrick Stewart as the plotting Sejanus. Timeless and easily still one of the best series ever.
