As it comes: 100 Days in Disability Care is an observational quest for the state of civilization in our country. How do we, as a society, deal with people who are completely dependent on care providers for their care needs? And what does good care mean when a cure is no longer an option?

It results in a fascinating and confronting internship journey for Nicolaas Veul. Having just become a father himself, he presents himself alternately as vulnerable, curious, searching, anxious, and empathetic. Veul is therefore perfectly cast for his role. His wonder and discomfort act as a mirror for the viewer: what would I do if I were interning here?

It is precisely this personal quest that makes the documentary strong. Without grand words or hasty judgments, Veul shows how complex disability care is and how much is asked of the people who care for the most vulnerable residents every day.

What ultimately lingers most is deep respect for our care providers. For people who stand ready day and night, often under extremely difficult circumstances, for residents who are completely dependent on them. 100 Days in Disability Care is therefore not only a glimpse behind the scenes, but also an uncomfortable mirror for society.

Beautiful television once again. In previous episodes of '100 dagen', Nicolaas Veul seemed at home everywhere with his blend of empathy, caring, social commitment, calmness, and patience. In the classroom. In psychiatric care, as a community welfare worker, or as a youth care worker. In every episode, you saw him grow into the role while confronting his own vulnerabilities. Sometimes, as a viewer, you might have thought that Nicolaas missed out on a career in social services. But it is so poignantly beautiful to see this 'jack of all trades' grapple with an intense target group like people with severe intellectual disabilities and autism. You see how difficult the work is, how it weighs on the well-being of the employees, and how important it is that people continue working in this sector.

And then there are the deeply moving portraits of the clients themselves. On the surface cheerful and innocent, but inside, so much is simmering. Yet 'Zoals Het Komt: 100 Dagen in de Gehandicaptenzorg' (2026) manages to capture each and every one of them in their layered nature as individuals with their own character and life course. So utterly human. They mourn lost family members or the lack of intimate relationships. They seek safety, security, warmth, and clarity from their caregivers. Sometimes they are afraid, frustrated, or angry. Sometimes they do strange things to be heard or because they want attention. For some clients, the care providers are their only remaining anchor in the absence of other family members.

You understand why Nicolaas drops out prematurely, but you also understand why we need heroes who care about this vulnerable target group.
